Black Hills 2009 : A great trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota with my High Country Cruiser friends. I had not been there since 2005, so a trip was long overdue, and this was the year to make it. Everything was very green due to the moisure this past Winter and Spring, while the temperatures were perfect in the 60s and 70s. We had 5-7 bikes at different times and had some great times hanging around the Lantern Inn. And the riding and scenery were awesome: Spearfish Canyon, Devils Tower, Deadwood, Vanaker Canyon, Nemo Road, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Wildlife Loop (lots of antelope, and of course the donkeys), Iron Mountain Road (the buffalo were here this year and probably numbered more than 1,000; still in Custer State Park), and Keystone. Oh, and we had pies one evening from the Purple Pie place in Custer -- awesome pies, especially the Strawberry-Rhubarb and the Peach. A great trip of a little more than 1200 miles with good friends. Life is good!!!

Ten Years of Riding -- 1999-2009 : Ten Years of Riding -- About 160,000 Miles -- Life is Good!!!!
I came back to motorcycle riding in April 1999 after a hiatus of about 17 years; I stopped riding after a pretty big accident back in my earlier years. It is great living in the mountains of Colorado since I can often just head west on the roads with less traffic. So, I've been back into riding for almost 10 years now, and a great 10 years it has been on the following bikes:
99 Honda Valkyrie -- Spring 99 to Spring 06; ~50k miles
02 Honda Gold Wing -- Spring 02 to Present; ~104k miles
06 Yamaha FJR1300 -- Spring 06 to Present; ~10k miles
Plus a few rides on rentals (Gold Wings--California in Fall 01 and Las Vegas/Death Valley in Spring 05; Harleys in Hawaii) and on my old friend Mark's ST1300 back in WV in Fall 07.

Lots of great riding to some great places in the United States and Canada; however, the rides were made even better by being able to make them with some great friends from the Colorado High Country Cruisers (HCC) and the GL1800 forum sponsored by HondaDirectLine. And, I must truly thank my riding buddy John/Smoky -- we have made so many great trips together (undoubtedly more than 125k miles). They have been really good times and may there be many more!

So, lean back, relax, and enjoy the slideshow -- it has been a great 10 years and 160,000+ miles.

Tetons, Yellowstone, Beartooth 2008 : My HCC friends and I had such a great trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone in 2006 that we decided to make this trip once again. Jan planned the Dubois and Tetons portion and I planned the continuation to Beartooth Pass and the Snowy Range. 13 bikes and 21 people for at least some portion of the trip -- a fun group of folks and a great time seeing some beautiful country. A few sprinkles/drizzle the morning of day 1, but clear blue skies and great weather after that. I hope you enjoy the photos -- it was a fun time!

Rockies-Gold 2008 : For the second (and final) year I organized a gathering of Gold Wings ( http://www.GL1800riders.com) in Montrose, 4-8 June, early this year so that folks could enjoy some of the snow-capped mountains. We had some rain on Wednesday and Thursday at the lower elevations and even some snow on the high passes. The rain was much lighter than during the monsoonal flow like we had last July, so it really did not keep most people from riding. Fresh snow on the high peaks made Friday, Saturday, and Sunday awesome days. About 140 bikes and 220 people showed up to enjoy some great riding and hang-out with old and new friends -- we also had two couples from France and one from South Africa; an amazing event. Awesome riding in Colorado -- especially with a great group of folks. NOTE: Most of the photos here are the ones that I took, but I have worked in several of Jim's and a few of Hedo's and Phil's to make the story more complete.

Southwest Trip Spring 2008 -- Nick, Steve, Al, and Dave : Nick and I decided last Fall that we should make a trip through Colorado to southern UT and northern AZ to show him some great riding experiences. We were joined by Steve and Al, and hit places like South Park, Monarch Pass, Dallas Divide, Paradox Valley, Moab, Dead Horse Point, Arches, Colorado River Riding (UT-128), LaSal Loop, UT-95, Hite, Capitol Reef, Boulder Mountain (UT-12), Grand Staircase - Escalante, Burr Trail, Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks, Zion, Kaibab Plateau, Grand Canyon (North and South Rims), Marble Canyon, Monument Valley, and Wolf Creek Pass. It was quite an 8-day trip, with temperatures in the low-100s early in the trip down to the upper 20s and snow at Cedar Breaks and the North and South Rims. We hooked-up with John and Jan (car trip) at Bryce and North Rim. A great trip with lots of good memories!!!

Spring Ride 2008 -- Laughlin River Run : We had not been to the Laughlin River Run for several years, so we decided to make that our Spring Ride this year, doing the full monty and purchasing the rediculously over-priced package so that we could stay at the Golden Nugget. Great time with John, Larry, Steve, Brad, Roy, and myself making the trip. Two days down, two days three nights in Laughlin, and two days home. Snowy Colorado High Country, Glenwood Canyon, Capitol Reef, Boulder Mountain, Escalante, Bryce Country, Red Canyon, Zion High Country, Virgin River Canyon, Valley of Fire, Northshore Rd (Lake Mead), Hoover Dam, Laughlin, Colorado River, Vendors, Enjoying the "sights", Hanging at the Pool, Old Rt 66, Oatman, South Rim Grand Canyon, Sunset in Monument Valley, US-62 to Chama, Cumbres and LaManga Passes, and Colorado High Country once again. Aussies in Utah -- Sept 2007 : Almost two years ago I started helping John and Karen, from Australia, plan a motorcycle trip around the southwestern United States. Well, finally their big day arrived. Traveling with Clint and Charlene, they rented Gold Wings in LA and then proceeded on their 2-week trip through CA, NV, UT, and AZ. I rode over to Bryce Canyon in Utah to hook-up and do a little riding with them. An awesome couple of days, hitting Bryce Canyon, UT-12, Grand Staircase/Escalante, Burr Trail, Boulder Mountain, Capitol Reef, and the Bi-Centennial Hwy (UT95). Great folks and a great few days -- sure glad that we could hook up.

Northwest Motorcycle Trip & HCC Rally -- August 2007 : Smoky and I were planning to head north to Canada, but with so many wildfires up that way, we decided while at the HCC Rally to head out to the Great Northwest. Our trip included the HCC Rally in Montrose, Columbia River Gorge, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, Rattlesnake Pass, Lolo Pass, Yellowstone NP, Beartooth Pass, and Chief Joseph Highway. Another great adventure -- 4200 miles.

Taos Trip 2006 : It had been several years since I had made a trip to Taos, NM, so over the Labor Day weekend I rode the FJR down with other members of the HCC. The weather was poor on the ride down, but we ended up with two good days of riding around Taos. On Sunday we did the Enchanted Loop: Taos > Red River > Vietnam Memorial > Angel Fire > Black Lake > Mora > Sipapu > Penansco > Espanola > Embudo Station (for a great dinner) > Taos. Monday back down the Rio Grande River canyon to Espanola > US-84 to Chama > US-64 to Taos. Tuesday several of us rode US-64 east to Raton, then I broke off from the rest of the group, having a fantastic ride home via backroads, including the Highway of Legends, CO69 to Westcliffe and on to the Arksansas River, US-50 along the Arkansas, then the backroads towards Cripple Creek and Woodland Park. A really nice trip.

HCC Montrose Rally -- 2006 : Perhaps one of the best years for the High Country Cruisers to hang-out in Montrose and ride some of the great roads in that area. Unaweep-Tebaugauch (Uncompaghre), San Juan loop (Million Dollar Highway), Black Canyon of the Gunnision, etc. Smoky and I went down to Pagosa Springs a day early, then Wednesday rolled back over Wolf Creek Pass then up through the Rio Grande Valley, Creede, Lake City, and Blue Mesa on the way to Montrose. We had about 35 people at the rally -- it was great seeing everyone and getting in some good riding with good friends. Enjoy the photos!

A Colorado Sampler for Toyo -- June 2006 : I met Toyo (Steven) and Krista at Cats-Cade 2006 and we enjoying hanging out and a little bit of riding together. In late June Steven rode from their home in Georgia to Prescott, AZ to visit his Dad for a few days. On the way home he came through Colorado to take in a couple of days of great riding. I rode from Woodland Park down to Durango (SW Colorado) early afternoon. We then rode from there up the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton, Ouray, and to Montrose for the night. The next day we took in the North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, CO-133, McClure Pass, Aspen, Independence Pass, and across South Park to my place in Woodland Park. A quick trip, but some awesome sights and riding. A good Colorado sampler for Toyo.
